The Summer Slowdown Myth: Why June Can Be a Strong Month for Pet Stores

If you’ve been in the pet retail business for a while, you’ve probably heard the saying: “Summer’s slow.” But the truth is, June can be one of the most strategic months for pet stores. By properly leveraging seasonal demand, shopper behavior, and timely merchandising, you can jumpstart your summer sales.

Here’s why you shouldn’t sleep on June, and how your store can turn the season into serious sales.

The Summer Shopper Is Active, Not Absent

As the weather warms up, people get out more, and they’re often bringing their pets with them. That means increased demand for travel accessories, outdoor gear, cooling products, and grooming supplies. Pet parents are looking for convenience and comfort, especially as they prepare for road trips, beach days, and hikes.

Display items like portable water bowls, collapsible carriers, breathable harnesses, and grooming tools in high-traffic areas to boost add-on purchases.

School’s Out—Families Are Shopping

With kids at home, many families shift their focus to small pets, aquariums, or other starter animals. Use this opportunity to promote entry-level habitats, enrichment toys, and educational kits. Products like Penn-Plax’s Aqua-Floras (decor that grows live plants) or betta starter kits can be easy, engaging ways for young pet owners to learn responsibility, while increasing your basket size.

Strategic Promotions = Summer Loyalty

June is a great time to run mid-year loyalty incentives, “Buy More, Save More” events, or Father’s Day-themed promotions. Highlight “Dad & Dog” bundles, offer grooming discounts, or create gift displays centered around pet dads.

A small giveaway or in-store event can also create buzz and traffic, even during slower weeks.

Get Ahead Before the Real Rush

June is the calm before the July 4th storm. Use this time to evaluate your store layout, restock fast-movers, and prep your inventory for late-summer surges. Review what’s selling and what’s not, so you’re positioned for success when the fireworks begin.
